Recommendations for Elephant Management at Pongola Private Game Reserve, South Africa

چکیده
Pongola Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is a small (12,959 ha private land and 1,943 ha state land) fenced reserve with a large elephant population (79 individuals). Landowners are increasingly concerned about elephant impact on vegetation in the reserve and thus steps must be made to ensure the sustainable management of this elephant population. In 2008 Disney Corporation funded vasectomies of the adult bulls as a means of preventing further population growth. The dominant male in the population was too large to undergo surgery and is receiving GnRH hormone suppressant to prevent breeding. Despite contraception, the elephant density at Pongola is still a cause for concern. In addition, little is know about the long-term effects of vasectomies on elephant behaviour and herd dynamics. Consequently, the ranging, habitat use, association patterns and social behaviour of the elephants at Pongola have been studied in detail during 2011 by a joint team from Disney’s Elephant Population Management Programme, Operation Wallacea, Wildlife & Ecological Investments, and Space For Elephants. The purpose of this report is to relay the findings of this study and use the empirical data in conjunction with information from other reserves to make a series of management recommendations for the elephants at Pongola Game Reserve.

Time-Delay Neural Network Based Predictions of Elephant Distribution in a South African Game Reserve
A large portion of South Africa’s elephant population can be found on small wildlife reserves. When confined to enclosed reserves the elephant densities are much higher than observed in the wild. The large nutritional demands and destructive foraging behavior of elephants threaten rare species of vegetation. If conservation management is to protect threatened species of vegetation, knowing how ...
متن کاملUnderstanding Tourists’ Preference for Mammal Species in Private Protected Areas: Is There a Case for Extralimital Species for Ecotourism?
Private Protected Areas (PPAs) often use wildlife-based ecotourism as their primary means of generating business. Achieving tourist satisfaction has become a strong driving goal in the management of many PPAs, often at the expense of biodiversity. Many extralimitral species, those which historically did not occur in an area, are stocked in PPAs with the intention of increasing ecotourism attrac...
متن کاملRange Analysis and Terrain Preference of Adult Southern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) in a South African Private Game Reserve: Insights into Carrying Capacity and Future Management
The Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is a threatened species, central to the tourism appeal of private game reserves in South Africa. Privately owned reserves in South Africa tend to be smaller than government run reserves such as Kruger National Park. Because of their relatively small size and the often heterogeneous nature of the landscape private game reserve managers benefit ...
متن کاملTaxonomy of the water beetle genus Limnebius Leach in southern Africa (Coleoptera: Hydraenidae).
The southern African species of the water beetle genus Limnebius Leach, 1815, are revised. Eleven new species are described, based on the examination and databasing of 6,201 specimens from 96 localities/events. Male genitalia are illustrated, and high resolution habitus images of the holotypes are provided. Distribution maps are provided for the eleven species now known from southern Africa, in...
متن کاملRules of habitat use by elephants Loxodonta africana in southern Africa: insights for regional management
Managers in southern Africa are concerned that continually increasing elephant populations will degrade ecosystems. Culling, translocation and birth control are flawed solutions. An alternative is providing elephants more space but this hinges on identifying landscape preferences. We examined two diverse ecosystems and uncovered similarities in elephant habitat use, expressing these as ‘rules’....
